EARLY 19TH CENTURY NEEDLEWORK OF THE HOLY FAMILY\'S FLIGHT INTO EGYPT - c.1830:

Early 19th century needlework - c.1830. Worked in wool and chenille, this silk work is just stunning with fine quality paint and stitch work throughout. The backing silk is dominated by a detailed depiction of The Holy Family\'s Flight into Egypt with Mary and the baby Jesus being carried on a donkey who is being led by a winged angel whilst Joseph walks beside his young family carrying a few belongings in a bag over his shoulder. The scene is framed by trees and lush foliage with a cloudy sky and an expanse of water in the distance.The backing silk has a few areas of damage to the sky which appear stable and are not as noticeable as in the photos which have been taken under a harsh light. The silk work is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the thread and paint appear good though they are likely to have mellowed over the years. The glass bead eye of the donkey is still bright. The silk work is contained within a mid 19th century mahogany frame which is in good conditionwith scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 16 3/4\" x 13 3/4\" (sight size) and 21\" x 18\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT\'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
