EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARY EAGLAND AGED 13 - c.1840:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Eagland aged 13. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central rosebush bowl with a flower basket and star to either side of its central bush and a dog and two floral motifs to the left and right of the bowl itself, each with a flower basket above. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse finishing with Mary's name and age written as 3teen

The verse has a rosebush and butterfly above and a central bird on a blossom branch below flanked by a bell flower, floral motif and floral urn. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey house with three floral motifs to the left side of its roof and two to the right, whilst the ground floor has a floral motif and rose to either side, each rose with a bird and deer to either side. The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, more noticeable in the middle section and some areas of faint staining. There are also a few small areas of damage and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass soI'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a good quality mid 19th century rosewood frame which is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, an old repair to the bottom edge and a small loss to the veneer on all four corners.
Measures 12 1/4" x 12 1/4" (sight size) and 15 3/4" x 15 3/4" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
