EARLY 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ANN MALE AGE 10- c.1830:
$395.00

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Male aged 10. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1830 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two central birds facing each other with a bird and tree to their left and right and a row of alphabet letters below underlined with a floral border. There is a row of five birds below the lettering with the following verse beneath which has a tree and birds to either side
Behold the labour of my tender ageAnd view this work which did my hours engageWith anxious care I did those colours placeA smile to gain from my dear parents faceWhose love for me I ever will regardAnd hope that h(e)aven will grant a kind reward
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent who has a flower to his left and right with two rosebuds above the Tree's topmost foliage followed by a butterfly and further rosebud. The Tree is standing between three hillocks, the central ones with Adam and Eve standing on them whilst those to their sides have a flower and lion standing on them. Both outer hillocks have an arched tree next to them, each with a flower and two birds nearby. This section of stitching then has the words - The Tree of Knowledge of good and evil - below underlined with a meandering floral border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central rosebush with a bird, floral urn and floral motif flanked by a bird and flower to each side, both floral motifs with a carnation bowl beside them. This section of stitching is then underlined with a long stitch triangulated border with Ann's name, that of her place of residence - Caldecot - her age and the date of July 25th below with a central floral motif flanked by birds and flowers running across the bottom edge of the linen. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border with a deer above its central foliage, the border pattern partially obscured by the frame. The linenhas overall discolouration consistent with its age darker to the field and paler around the edges from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. The linen is noticeably darker down the upper right side edge and across the bottom edge which looks as though it may have been in contact with water. There are also several areas of damage and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. Some of the damage has resulted in the loss of an odd stitch here and there. The sampler is behind glasssoI'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There are also areas of thinning to some of the stitching. The sampler is contained within an early 19th century reeded ebonised frame which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a loss to the outer left lower corner..
Measures 12 1/4" across x 13 1/4" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 16 1/4" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION.
SHIPPING WILL BE VIA FEDEX OR PARCELFORCE - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.
