Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Anne Forgie - 1835. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout.The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a small fruit basket centrally above, an open tailed peacock, floral motif and larger fruit basket to each side with an additional bird by the left side floral motif, all underlined with a floral border

The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central laurel wreath surrounding a bird bath plus two birds, both with a diamond above them. There is a fruit basket to each side with the name T.Forgie below the left side basket and M.Forgie below the right side basket which also has a dog in a kennel nearby. The wreath then has a central tulip below flanked by a flower basket, floral urn and spray of flowers. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an impressive two storey country house with attic rooms which have two crowns and two birds above. The house has a set railings to either side, each with a folly building behind them with two crowns above. The left side crowns have a flower basket flanked by a floral motif over them whilst the crowns to the right have a trio of flower baskets and a bird above. Anne\'s name and the date of June 26th 1835run across the bottom edge of the linen, then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler is over a stretcher. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is minor bleeding to the stitch work of the verse and to the green stitching of the border pattern running across the bottom edge. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original hand painted striped wood effect frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip having age related rubbing and the frame with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large piece measuring 17 1/2\" x 20 1/4\" (sight size) & 23 1/2\" x 26 1/4\" including the frame.
