Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Jane Richardson aged 10 - 1817. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse, the title contained within a narrow plaque with a diamond to each side
LIFE IS SHORTWhen young life's journey I began, the glitt'ring prospect charm'd my eyesI saw along the extended plan, joy after joy successive riseBut soon I learnt twas all a dream and learn'd the fond pursuit to shunWhere few can reach their purpos'd aim and thousands daily are undone
The verse has a flower basket to both sides, each with a bird above and is then underlined with a deep floral border. The middle section of the linen contains a central plaque with a floral motif flanked by a bird on top and containing Jane's details and the date of Anno.1817 plus a smaller shaped plaque to each side containing the advice - Cease to do Evil - and Learn to do well. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central exquisitely worked flower basket standing on an expanse of grass with two birds above it , both with a rose basket nearby. The central flower basket has a bird and fruit tree to its left and right, then the whole piece is surrounded by a carnation border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places with a few small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse,but the colours of the silks appear good silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also very minor bleeding to the black stitch work of the verse. There is a small amount of thinning to some of the red and gold stitching, stitch loss to the paler stitching of the long stitch grass and minor bleeding to some of the stitching of the central flower basket standing on it. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century Hogarth style frame which is in very good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.Measures 12 1/2" x 16"(sight size) and 14 3/4" x 18 1/4" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
