Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Shaw - 1830. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with the following verse which has a floral swag flanked by a butterfly above and is then underlined with a meandering floral border

The lowersection of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge with a pair of birds on its topmost foliage and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Both figures have a spray of flowers, rosebush and fruit tree beside them with a flower basket above the rosebush which has Ann\'s name next to the left basket and the date of 1830 next to the one on the right. There are a man and his wife standing below Adam and Eve with a floral motif nearby. The bottom edge of the linen is stitched with a charming image of an expanse of grass with sheep and lambs grazing on it and a flower bowl standing to the centre flanked by a fruit basket, flower baskets, carnation bowl and tree. The top and side edges are then stitched with a floral border with a leaf in both upper corners, the border pattern running across the top mostly obscured by the slip of the frame.Thelinen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with patches of faint staining and a lighter streak running down the verse on the left side. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also bleeding to the black stitch work of the verse and a few small areas of stitch loss to the letters of the verse where the pale streak is running through them. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird\'s eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age plus a couple of old losses to the veneer.Measures 14\" x 15 3/4\" (sight size) and 18 1/12\" x 20\" including the frame.
