The Douay-Rheims Bible is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English. It is named after the University of Douai in France and the city of Rheims in France, where the New Testament was translated. The Old Testament was translated from the Latin Vulgate by English clergy in Rheims, and the New Testament was translated from the Latin Vulgate by English clergy in Douai. The translation was undertaken in the 16th and 17th centuries, with the New Testament being published in 1582 and the Old Testament being published in two volumes in 1609 and 1610.
The Douay-Rheims Bible is significant because it was the first English translation of the Bible to be published on the European continent, and it was also the first translation of the Bible to be printed in Roman type rather than the more common black letter. The translation was made by Roman Catholic scholars, and as such, it was intended for use by Roman Catholics in England who were seeking a translation of the Bible that was faithful to the Latin Vulgate and that was free from Protestant influence.
The Douay-Rheims Bible was widely used by Roman Catholics in English-speaking countries, and it was also influential in the development of other English translations of the Bible. However, it fell out of favor in the 19th and 20th centuries due to its archaic language and its adherence to the Latin Vulgate rather than the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Despite this, the Douay-Rheims Bible remains an important historical document and is still used by some Roman Catholics today.
