1898, Feb. 22, Berlin – Dr. Astra Călugăreanu-Nandriș was born

(†1987, July 21, Bucharest), daughter of Prof. doc. Dimitrie Călugăreanu

(1868-1937) and Maria (née Maxim), a graduate of the Faculty of Sciences and

graduate of the Conservatory of Singing and Dramatic Art in Iași.

He received a choice education in the family but also in primary and high schools in

Bucharest; he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest (1918), but in

1921 he followed his father, who had been appointed to the Faculty of Medicine in Cluj,

where she graduated from college in 1923, being employed as a teacher, then

assistant at the Department of Pathological Anatomy, led by Prof. Dr. Titu Vasiliu

(1885-1961); he obtained the degree of doctor of medicine Magna cum laude with

thesis "Contributions to the study of slow endocarditis" (Dec. 24, 1924), published at

National Culture Ed., Bucharest, 1924 and in "Annalles de médecine", no. 6,

Paris, 1925, equalized (1968, Sept. 16); attended specialization courses and

improvement in the laboratories and children's clinics of the Faculty of Medicine

from Paris (1925-1926), receiving 3 diplomas in child care, children's diseases and diseases

contagious; married (1926, Apr. 18) the Bucovina dr. doc. Ion

Nandriș (1890-1967), the future primary care physician and head of the ENT department in the Hospital

Central, Chernivtsi; followed a 6-month internship at the Children's Clinic in

Strasbourg (1926/1927); employed at the Children's Clinic of Prof. Manicatide from

Bucharest (1927-1929); secondary doctor at the Children's Hospital in Chernivtsi

(1929-1932), then primary physician, director of this hospital (1933-1940);

seconded in Bucharest to the Children's Cradle "St. Ecaterina" and the Dispensary

Romanian-British (1940-1942); director of the Children's Hospital in Chernivtsi

(1942-1944); primary physician at Cantacuzino Hospital (1944-1946); doctor

primary pediatrician at the "Bread Machine" Dispensary and the Cotroceni Hospital

(1946-1957); primary care physician, head of the Newborn Department at the Maternity Hospital

Giulesti (1957-1969); awards: "Health Merit" Cross, cl. I (1942);

"Crown of Romania" in the rank of knight (1943); among dozens of works

published that illustrate a fruitful scientific activity we mention:

"Newborn exanguinotransfusion", applied for the first time as a method

in our country; member of the Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology Society

and the History of Medicine and Pharmacy (12;13).
