Dimetrodon is lived during theEarlyPermian, around 295–272million years ago.The most prominent feature ofDimetrodonisthe largeneural spine sailon its back formed by elongated spinesextending from thevertebrae. Itwalked on four legsand had atall, curved skull with large teeth of different sizes set along the jaws. Mostfossils have been found in theSouthwestern United States, the majoritycoming from a geological deposit called theRed Beds of Texas and Oklahoma.Over a dozen species have been named in thegenus.

Dimetrodonisoften mistaken for adinosauror as a contemporary of dinosaurs inpopular culture, but it became extinct some 40million years before thefirst appearance of dinosaurs.Reptile-like in appearance andphysiology,

Dimetrodonwasprobably one of theapex predatorsof its ecosystems, feeding on fishandtetrapods, including reptiles andamphibians. The sail ofDimetrodonmayhave been used to stabilize its spine or to heat and cool its body as a formofthermoregulation.

Dimetrodonwas aquadrupedal, sail-backedsynapsid. MostDimetrodonspecies ranged in length from 6 to15ft and are estimated to have weighed between 60 and 550lbs.Thelarger species ofDimetrodonwere among the largest predatorsof the Early Permian.

The sail ofDimetrodonis formed byelongatedneural spinesprojecting from the vertebrae. Each spinevaries in cross-sectional shape from its base to its tip in what is known as\"dimetrodont\" differentiation.
