Dawson was first and foremost a supply centre for the goldfields. Support industries like the timber business boomed as Dawson grew, burned, and grew again. Of Dawson\'s four mills in 1902 this one, the Klondike Mill, was considered \"the largest plant of its kind in the Yukon\" and annually produced 4 million feet of rough and

Yukon river steamers forged a vital link between Dawson and the outside world. By 1902, 22 steamers running from the railhead at Whitehorse and 27 from the Bering Sea delivered almost 30,000 tons of freight and over two thousand passengers to Dawson. From Dawson, merchandise and heavy machinery were transhipped by road to the outlying creeks.
