DOROTHEA BAIRD : ENGLISH STAGE AND FILM ACTRESS : PARLOR PHOTOGRAPH : RPPC:
$14.00

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty English stage and film actress Dorothea Baird (1875-1933). The card captures Miss Baird \" standing in a parlor. She is surrounded by hanging photographs. Note the baby portrait that is on a stand in the fireplace. There is a clock on the mantel as well as a stack of books. One can also see a couch with comfortable looking pillows. This is certainly a homey photograph. Baird\'s father was a prominent English barrister. Her stage debut was in 1894 with the Oxford University Dramatic Society. She appeared in their production of \"The Tempest\". Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland author) saw her performance and took her to London to see Ellen Terry perform. He also took her backstage to meet the actress. That experience inspired her and she set out to become a professional actress. Along the way, she met and married actor, H. B. Irving. She appeared in a number of Shakespearean plays with her husband. In 1904, Baird acted in the original version of \"Peter Pan\". After suffering a miscarriage in 1913, she retired from the stage. She devoted herself to charitable causes. She had a special interest in infant welfare. She was a board member and fund raiser for many years of a London health center (St. Pancras School for Mothers). The school provided information and made home visits to assist mothers and also provided health care for their babies. Baird was also involved in the producing of a film called \"Motherhood\" (1917). The goal of the film was to help improve the \"living habits\" of mothers and infants. The film was meant to sway British politicians to work toward the improvement of social conditions to benefit mothers and their children. This postcard was published by Hartmann as part of a series (no.H162). This vintage real photo postcard has edgewear at the middle top of the card and is in overall good condition (see scans).
