DIABASE/DOLERITE EGG 59 X 46 MM 175 GDiabase, also called dolerite or microgabbro, is a mafic, holocrystalline, subvolcanic rock equivalent to volcanic basalt or plutonic gabbro. Diabase is fine- to medium-grained, darkgreyto black intrusive igneous rock. Chemically and mineralogically, diabase closelyresembles the volcanic rock basalt, but it is somewhat coarser and contains glass. With increase in grain size, diabase may pass into gabbro.
Diabase typically has a mineral composition that is dominated by theplagioclase feldspar knownas labradorite. Most of the remainder is made up of pyroxene minerals, usually augite. Minor amounts of hornblende, olivine, magnetite, and quartz can be found in some diabase rocks.
