They are still with us today, of course, and their heritage remains for all to see, despite \'modernisation\'.The tourist industry of Cornwall was built up by the publicity machine of the Great Western Railway, who developed popular resorts to encourage traffic over their lines. The arch-rival London & South Western Railway took a hand also in the North of Cornwall. The market gardeners and fishermen of the county came to rely on the speed and effeciency of the railway to get their produce to distant markets. The rivalry between the two companies was intense and often heated, sometimes illegal. Another rivalry came with the battle of the gauges, eventually lost by Brunel\'s broad gauge. But before this local companies were working directly for the local communities, connecting inland towns and mines with the sea, and enabling Cornwall\'s major industry of mining to flourish. As well as a history of Cornwall\'s railways this book provides a guide to what is worth seeking out today.
