Confederate Captain John Lewis Cochran Looks To Settle Land Deal:
$95.00

JOHN LEWIS COCHRAN (1827 – 1900) was a Confederate who enlisted in the CSA on May 8, 1861 at Charlottesville, VA, as a Private. He was mustered into B Co. VA 19th Infantry and transferred out on January 30, 1863, to military court in Longstreet’s Corps as its Provost Marshal. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 1, 1861 and to Captain on April 28, 1862.

Cochran commanded the regiment after Col. Strange was killed on South Mountain, but was ill and not present with his company at Sharpsburg. Once he transferred to Longstreet’s Corps, he remained in that post for the remainder of the war. After the war, he resumed his law practice in Charlottesville and was Judge of the County Court from 1872 – 1884.

2 1/2 pp, 5 x 8, ALS, Charlottesville, VA, August 15, 1888, regarding his legal client’s land purchase.

“I suppose the safest and least expensive way to settle Mr. Welsman’s land purchase would be send a draft upon me...to Major Thos. L. Brown for $2205.74 being the amount of liens upon this land and his personal claim...If this be agreeable then I would still owe $544.26...As I have never seen this Deed, I will have to leave it to you to examine it and see that it is what it should be. Major Brown informed me that an ejectment suit is already docketed...John L. Cochran”

Folds. Light toning. Nice Cochran signature.
