Colorado, Utah Mining History: The Story of Gilsonite, Uintah Railway by Herbert F Kretchman (Author) An informative history of Gilsonite mining in the Uinta Basin from the early days to Sam Gilson\'s development of the Gilsonite Asphaultum Co, the growth of mining camps Dragon and Watson, and up until the 1950s. In the 1950s a slurry pipeline was built to carry Gilsonite across the Book Cliffs (along the old Uinta Railway Grade, discontinued in 1932) to a refining facility near Grand Junction. At this time Gilsonite was experimented with as an alternative energy source, and both gasoline and diesel fuel were refined from it in Grand Junction. This was done in a partnership with Chevron. It was estimated that the Gilsonite Reserves in the Uinta Basin were equal to about 100 million barrels of oil. However, this project was abandoned by the 1970s, the pipeline was shut down, and American Gilsonite Company went back to its roots as a chemical supply company. Mining is now done with penumatic drills and hand shoveling, which keeps the Gilsonite drier which makes it easier to work with.
