Half way between Thompson Springs and Arches National Park is my second collection site. It is part of the Dinosaur Diamond in Utah. The site is on the side of a hill overlooking a vast plain. Part of the Morrison formation, this area was a hotbed of dinosaurs in the Mesozoic (an era that includes the Jurassic. Just 10 miles away are preserved footprints of therapods and raptors. There is no desert varnish at or near this site. The internal colors show that the minerals are different here, and the internal structure suggests that the animals are also different. The bulk of the specimens are broken if not shattered at this site.
Large lumpy plops like this are almost always the result of a good sized carnivore. This piece is about 4.25 x 4 x 2.5 inches, and weighs 27.6 ounces.
