Civil War Rubber Army Poncho Although rubber had been used for decades prior to the Civil War, it was not until the 1840s that a process - called vulcanization - was discovered to make the manufacture of rubberized clothing possible. During the Mexican War, the US army contracted for rubberized knapsacks and ground cloths. When the Civil War started there was a rush to procure the new waterproof gear for the troops, and contractors began churning out thousands of ponchos and ground cloths - collectively referred to as \"gum blankets.\" They would be a standard piece of military gear for all Union soldiers. Our rubber poncho features a slit at the center making it suitable for wearing and reinforced grommets just like the originals.
