Circa 1870’s Quack Cure Bottle, Label, Dr. Jones Red Clover Tonic, Ottawa, IL:

Early and rare embossedpatent medicine bottle for Dr. Jones Red Clover Tonic manufactured by E.Y.Griggs, Ottawa, Illinois (as shown on the rear label). Square amber bottle stands just under 9” tall and hasan applied top with collar. The bottle is embossed “Griggs & Co./Ottawa,Ills.” on one indented side panel and “Dr. Jones Red Clover Tonic” with anembossed Clover Leaf or Shamrock on the other indented side panel. Theembossing is fairly weak but is clear and readable. This is a rare bottle, madeeven rarer with nearly complete frontand rear labels. The front label is missing a small portion at the very bottomand features a clover leaf and states that it is “A Perfect Blood Purifier” andlists several ailments treated including “Loss of Energy” and FeebleAppetite”. The rear label is 95%complete and includes directions for use and states that it is “especiallyrecommended for the safe and speedy cure of Diseases of the KIDNEYS andBLADDER”. Both labels are in fair-good condition with moderate darkening fromage. The bottle itself is in very good condition with a small burst open bubbleon the edge above the “G” in “Griggs” (see photo #8). The bottle is corkedand retains most of its original contents (there is paraffin tape over thecork to prevent any accidental leakage). Rare early Midwest quack cure bottle, made even rarer by the nearlycomplete original labels.
