The Chesapeake, Shendun & Western Railroad was incorporated on January 22, 1892, in Virginia. The name was changed to the Chesapeake & Western Railroad on May 14, 1895. The road was opened from Elkton Junction, VA to Bridgewater, VA, 26.67 miles, on April 29, 1896. The road was original projected from Tidewater on Chesapeake Bay via Elkton, Harrisonburg, Dayton and Bridgewater, VAThe Chesapeake Western Railway was incorporated March 3, 1900, in Virginia. Its line from Bridgewater to North River Gap, VA, was opened for traffic on June 1, 1902. The company leased the Chesapeake & Western Railroad for 99 years on May 1, 1902, at an annual rental equal to the interest on its bonds, maintenance, taxes, etc., terminable by either party on 60 days notice.On December 29, 1942, the CW took over the 25-mile segment of the B&O from Harrisonburg to Staunton.
