We are pleased to offer the iconic Cigar Store Indian sculptures by the famous Gallagher family! The Gallaghers were the original carvers of the famous Cigar Store Indians that became a symbol of tobacco stores and trading posts in the Southwest.

Own a piece of Southwestern Americana history! This fabulous Cigar Store Indian Chief is a replica of the one used on the TV show Cheers, which the Gallaghers had also carved for the show. Hand carved by the originators of the iconic Cigar store wooden Indians that decorated the tobacco stores and trading posts in the Southwest.

Hand carved out of one piece of Colorado Aspen. Colorado Aspen is the preferred material for these cigar store Indian sculptures. Hand painted with intricate details, a buffalo motif breast plate and signed on the back by the master carver Frank Gallagher. Measures approx. 5 feet tall, including the base. A two page copy of an article about the Gallagher family will be included. The hand painted details and colors are simply fabulous! Signed on the back by the famous Man-Dan Indian carver Frank Gallagher.

It's 5 feet tall and 13-16" wide 12-14" deep

Each one is handmade to order so no 2 are ever exactly alike

The 5 footers average from 110 LBS to 125 LBS

You've seen them at Trading Post, you've seen them at souvenir shops, now you have the opportunity to own your own "Cigar Store Wooden Indian". Carved by the same family that carved the very first one for a man that owned Gallaghers Furniture Store, back in the 1800's. A truly unique conversation piece, for home, office or storefront. Own a piece of American heritage, a Frank Gallagher original sculpture.

"Wood Carvings" were first created after Native Americans introduced English settlers to tobacco in Virginia during the 1600's. Later, merchants put the sculptures outside their stores to show customers that they sold tobacco products. Frank Gallaghers ancestor, one of the first wooden Indian carvers, started carving his Indians in the 1840's. His great, great grandson Frank is known to be one of approximately 12 true full-blooded Man-Dan Indians still living. Unfortunately, the Man-Dan village was infected by smallpox which practically wiped out the entire tribe. Frank's ancestor however, was away from the village at the time, working for a furniture maker. The furniture maker's name was Samuel Gallagher. Following the custom of Indian laborers of that era, Frank took his employer's last name as his own. One of the original Wooden Indians are on display in the Smithsonian Institute. The Gallagher's continue the art of carving as their ancestor would want it; the old way - the right way - by hand. Due to the nature of authentic hand-crafted items, please allow for minor artistic differences.

Aspen wood from Colorado is the preferred raw material for the creations of the Gallaghers.

(Natural wood does get a crack here and there on occasion. Please be assured it is a natural process and not a defect.)
