Here is an excellent example of the primary copper ore Butte, MT has produced. This mining area, although \"the richest hill on earth\", did produce very little native copper, most copper came from secondary copper minerals. By far the richest copper was produced in massive Chalcocite veins. Interestingly enough, very few of them have survived the heyday of mining, and are now vary hard to find. Most did end up in the processing plant. Massive Bornite is much more common to see from Butte today versus Chalcocite. Here you see an excellent older specimen which shows a part of a massive Chalcocite vein, as it would have been encountered. The Chalcocite is laced with Chalcopyrite crystals. One side of the piece was sawed, to display the interesting patterning of the Chalcopyrite crystals in the Chalcocite better. Very interesting piece, and more hefty that the photo\'s might indicate, heavy relative to it\'s size too.This specimen is 235 grams, or 8 1/4 oz. The size is 2 inch x 1.4 inch x 1.7 inch.
