Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’ The “75” is Castello’s interpretation of the traditional Lovat shape, though as with all of the workshop’s shapes, their version is quite distinct. It’s somewhere between a stack, a Lovat, a lumberman, and a saddle billiard, and it’s also changed a little over the years. This iteration, from somewhere between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s (hence the “K” grading), leans more toward the saddle billiard, albeit with a more formidable length than usual. The pipe’s tall bowl also allows it to show of brilliant bird’s-eye patterns on either side of its bowl, joined by cross-grain at its aft and fore. The condition is very good. There’s some finish fading on the rim, and a little tooth chatter on the stem, but these are minor, cosmetic imperfections.
