This is a heavy carboniferous root section from and ancient Lycopod tree. Very nicely detailed specimen. This rootfragment from Kentucky is preserved as a silty shale cast with a coalified outer skin and has matrix attached. Shows characteristic circular pits where root hairsattached. This specimen has a thick flatter form. As the roots reached near the terminal ends they became flatter.

Solid and heavy. About 12\" long and 4\" wide, tapers slightly toward the end. The black outer skin is intact. This shows where it was on it\'s way to becoming coal. Has matrix on the underside. Look at all the pictures.

Photographed dry outside. Cleaned with plain water. Specimen is as found.

Stigmaria isa fossilized root from a prehistoric tree that grew in the coal swamps of the Carboniferous era over 300 million years ago. The little round depressions mark where rootlets were once attached in a whirl pattern, like the bristles of a bottle brush. These were the rooting structures ofcoal forestlycopsidtrees such asSigillariaandLepidodendron. These swamp forest trees grew to over 100 feet and were anchored by an extensive network of these roots branching underground.
