FIELD - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 05/15/1867 - HFSID 154224CYRUS FIELD. Manuscript Letter signed: "Cyrus W. Field",1 p, 6¾x8¼ black-bordered mourning paper. New York, 1867 May 15. To David A. Wells Esq., Care of the Naval Office, Custom House, New York. In full: "Yours of the 14th received this morning. Enclosed you have letters of introduction to Mr John Bright M.P. and W. E. Forster M.P. Wishing you a safe, and pleasant passage. I remain, my dear Mr Wells, Very truly your friend." FIELD (1819-1892), who amassed a fortune in the paper business, was chiefly responsible for the laying of the first submarine telegraph cable between the U.S. and Europe (1857-1866). In 1877, he resuscitated the New York City elevated system, which had been founded in 1870. The first urban rapid transit system in the U.S., it finally became popular in 1878. David Ames WELLS (1813-1891) was an American chemist best known for his economic writings, especially his support for free trade and opposition to a graduated income tax. William Edward FORSTER (1818-1886) and John BRIGHT (1811-1889) were prominent English Parliamentarians, Bright being especially well known as a political reformer and advocate of free trade. Shipping - We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges are calculated at time of payment and are dependent on the number of items purchased and the destination shipping address. Due to the value of most purchases, a signature is required for delivery. This policy limits our ability to ship to PO Boxes.
