\"THE TIGER COWRY - but with superior qualities.
There is hardly a book on shells which does not figure the Tiger Cowry. It is without doubt the most Iconic of the cowries and it lives in vast part of the planet: the range goes from East Africa, all the way the Hawaii, traversing without difficulties both the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. This is mainly a tropical species, but it extents also in the subtropics and occasionally beyond.
The shells are highly variable, but attempts to find valid subspecies always failed. In some areas, “gigantism” is well known: for example on the Comore Islands or in the Hawaiian Islands.
The color goes from albino to black with all kinds of spotted variants between in. Shells from shipwrecks become occasionally rusty or yellowish. Nanism is also well documented from some Philippine areas. Young shells have greenish shells with olive colored patterns.
Shells with toothless apertures occur, thousands of freaks are know, but they are still rarities compared to the normal shells, of which millions have been collected.
