A RECENT PRINT WHICH HAS BEEN HAND-COLORED AND HAND-AUGMENTED WITH MASONIC ADDITIONS ALONG THE SIDES TO RESEMBLE AN OLD HAND-COLORED ENGRAVING

"The Compass of the Wise" was a German book on Alchemy published in 1779. The Frontispiece has obvious elements of Freemasonry mixed in with the inclusion of the two Pillars of the Temple Jachin & Boaz and the checkered floor. What the illustration attempts to illustrate is how the 7 metals of Alchemy are infused with the virtues of the traditional 7 planets. It also includes an As Above, so Below Hermetic theme with Superius above and Inferius below being connected in this fashion. The traditional 4 elements are also located on the twin Pillars. It perhaps represented an idealized or imaginary machine that the author thought might be created with enough ingenuity.
