Two-page handwritten letter to his mother, to whom he was almost obsessively attached, signed "Love & osculations, Poop"
Autograph Letter signed: "Poop", 2 pages, 6x9. Chicago, Illinois, "Saturday", postmarked April 16, 1927. On letterhead of the Edgewater Beach Hotel to "Mommie [?] dear" [envelope: "Mrs. Mabelle Webb", New York, N.Y.] In full: "Enclosed the so & so. Have a great time with Mary. I think he [?] is a peach. She of course just dying to get me to work with her again. I must say I never saw anyone so glad to see anybody as she was. The Lido people have taken George & the bitch on for their option. Humphrey leaves in two weeks so now Kenneth is sending for his car. Will have talked to you on the phone by the time you get this, so bye bye Bunnie. My banjo is called the Maybelle. Is that a scream - Love & osculations." Accompanied by mailing envelope addressed in his hand and signed in the return address: "C. Webb". Clifton Webb (1891-1966) sang, danced and acted exclusively on stage until 1944, when he earned the first of his three Oscar Nominations for Laura. The other Oscar offers came for The Razor's Edge (1946) and The Baby Sitter (1948). For the latter, Webb developed his best remembered character, the pompous, irritable bachelor, Mr. Belvedere. Webb's mother Mabelle (1869-1960) moved to New York with "little Webb", as she called her son, in 1892. They lived together until her death. Webb, a discreet homosexual, never married. His obsessive grief over his mother's death prompted close friend Noel Coward to say, "It must be difficult to be orphaned at seventy." Webb never recovered from Mabelle's death, making one more film and then living the rest of his life in seclusion. He is buried next to his mother. Multiple mailing folds. Toned. Minor ink smears. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:CLIFTON WEBB See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (12,502) category.
