Here's a classic piece of gold quartz extracted from a hard rock mine in the southern Sierra Nevada Mtns. Specimen shows no weathering or deformation from being transported. The photos have not been doctored up. It's absolutely stunning to behold in it's golden-ness. The crystalline habit is as found after being meticulously-removed from a quartz vein and lens. In streams and rivers draining the east slope of the Sierra Nevada, placer gold shows weathering. This does not. Any decent VLF detector will scream on this morsel of man's favorite metal. I've enjoyed the complete natural-ness of this incredible specimen and believe you will too.

Embryonic gold is often associated with silicon dioxide (quartz) and found crystallized inside it. Sometimes, other minerals, mainly of a ferromagnesian nature, accompany gold. GLIMMERS OF HOPE

by Gene RalphIn the lower 48, when watersheds that drain a mining district are gold-bearing, there’s a high probability they’ve already been hammered. Glimmers of hope remain, however. Few old diggings were completely worked out. Many came close to being exhausted, but eighteen years of prospecting 'hungry ground' taught me this. If extensive hand work is evident, and the ground is relatively shallow, some of those old timers must at least have been making bean money. Practically every claim I found gold on had been worked at least once. With today's gold prices, chances for making any claim pay are somewhat improved. Of course, gold still has to be in the ground. A few colors doesn’t magically turn a property into a gold mine. Everyone wants ‘a little gold mine to call his own', but an unpatented claim should have significant ‘locatable minerals’ on it, in this case, gold, to be considered either valid or viable. Sometimes, it takes years of prospecting to determine what’s worth hanging onto and what isn’t. That’s up to the claim-holder or lessee to figure out. The B.L.M. isn't responsible for testing unpatented claims. It’s up to prudent men and women to satisfy the prudent man test. There are minimum legal requirements spelled out by the 1872 mining law. Many claims don’t meet these minimum requirements, but Uncle Gov will happily accept your money in claim filing fees. Plenty of placer deposits are minute, confined to a single draw, wash, creek, ravine, arroyo, or pediment. Oftimes, these are situated directly beneath an isolated vein, tertiary channel, abandoned mine, or quartz outcropping. Maybe an ounce of gold is all that remained after the old timers got finished with it; yet, if today’s prospector can find it, hey! That's not a bad score though not everyone would spend an entire season searching for one measly ounce. Then again, maybe you would. I did and was thrilled beyond words by every little nugget found. Based on experience, it's realistic to say a good many mined-out claims will not contain ten ounces of minable gold. If you own mineral rights to such properties and are determined to extract every speck, be prepared for a long stay. On a positive note, a prospector can have just as much fun mining these smaller deposits recreationally as serious miner types who require copious amounts of oro.
