CHAMPOLLION (1924)
Built by Soc. Provencale de Construction Navales, La Ciotat, France for the Messageries Maritimes Line, French flag. Tonnage: 12,262. Dimensions: 508\'x62\'. Twin-screw, 15 knots, triple expansion engines, two masts and three funnels. Lengthened to 531 feet (12,546 GT) in 1933-34. At time of rebuilding had a Maier bow installed. Speed increased to 18 knots Served as a troopship in World War II. Wrecked at entrance to Beyrouth harbour, December 22, 1952. Sister ship: MARIETTE PACHA.
