              80th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force showing No 32 (Royal) Squadron aircraft signed by Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Armitage KCB CBERAF(80)8c commemorative cover dual numbered JS(CC)48g produced for the 80th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force showing the aircraft of No 32 (The Royal) Squadron. The cover bears a 35p Ascension Island Princess Diana stamp cancelled with Royal VIP Flying RAF 80th Anniversary cachet. The cover has been flown a HS125 700 Series of No 32 Squadron.

Following the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales, one of No 32 (The Royal) Squadron\'s BAe 146 aircraft, captained by Sqn Ldr Graeme Laurie, brought her body back to the United Kingdom from Paris on the 31 August 1997. HRH The Prince of Wales was also on board the aircraft, which was met on its arrival at RAF Northolt by the Lord Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, the Lord Lieutenant of London, the Secretary of State for Defence, the RAF Chaplain in Chief, the AOC No 38 Group, and Group Captain P J Hoskins, the Station Commander. The Queen\'s Colour Squadron of the RAF based at RAF Uxbridge provided the bearer party.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Armitage KCB CBE

Sir Michael was a Halton Apprentice before attending RAF College Cranwell. He was commissioned in 1953 and held various flying and staff appointments including No 28 Squadron in Hong Kong, and Nos 1 & 4 Flying Training Schools. He attended Staff College in 1965 and then posted as Personal Staff Officer to Commander 2nd Allied Tactical Air Force the following year. He was Officer Commanding No 17 Squadron 1967-70. After Joint Service Staff College in 1970 he was posted as Station Commander RAF Luqa, Malta 1972-1974. Returning to the UK he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in 1975. He held the post of Director Forward Policy, Ministry of Defence (Air Force Department) 1976-78 followed by Deputy Commander RAF Germany 1978-80. He then took the post of Senior RAF Member, RCDS 1980-1981 before becoming Director of Service Intelligence in 1982. He was Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Intelligence) 1983-84 before being promoted to Chief of Defence Intelligence 1985-86. He held the post of Air Member for Supply and Organisation 1986-87 before his last posting as Commandant, Royal College of Defence Studies 1988-89. He was awared the KCB in 1983 and the CBE in 1975.
