Major James Mercur, West Point Class of 1862 is the namesake for Mercur Peak, the famous climbing destination providing a stunning view of Cherry Valley, Yosemite are named for him. Captain Mercur explored the Yosemite area, as well as the author of a number of military tactics manuals used by the United States Army. As an engineer he also surveyed the Great Lakes and removed obstructions at Charleston, SC, Norfolk, Va and the Cape Fear River, NC. An original 6 x 4\" cabinet photo chestview of Major Mercur in uniform, with photo imprint by Pach Bros, New York circa 1880s. Ink idd applied label on front lower mat. Edge wear, Overall VG.
