Apollo 13(April 11–17, 1970) was the seventh crewed mission in theApollo space programand the third meant to land on the Moon. The craft was launched fromKennedy Space Centeron April11, 1970, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank in theservice module(SM) ruptured two days into the mission, disabling its electrical andlife-support system. The crew, supported by backup systems on thelunar module(LM), instead looped around the Moon in acircumlunar trajectoryand returned safely to Earth on April17. The mission was commanded byJim Lovell, withJack Swigertascommand module(CM) pilot andFred Haiseaslunar module(LM) pilot. Swigert was a late replacement forKen Mattingly, who was grounded after exposureto rubella.
