A good textbook example of a wartime single decal Bulgarian M36 helmet with a nice bit of aging, in an uncommon larger size. The M36 was designed pre-war, and the type C helmets were all made throughout the course of the war, outfitted with decals. The Kingdom of Bulgaria during the war became a reluctant Axis ally, allowing the Germans to pass through its territory. Bulgaria did not fight the Soviet, and ended up aligning themselves with the Soviets in 1944. Most of the fighting done by Bulgaria during the war was in fact against the German troops. After the war, communism was established in Bulgaria, and the Kingdom was abolished.

The Bulgarian tricolor decal on the M36 would be either covered up or painted on separately with their reissuing during the communist era. This one seems to have survived being reissued, and retains wartime components, such as the chinstrap and the stenciled decal. The decal is somewhat worn, but is largely intact. The exterior overall has a very good look, and the leather liner is still very supple and in solid condition. On the liner is marked twice with the size, 58, and written initials, “В. П. И”, or “V. P. I”. The thin wartime chinstrap is intact, though it has seen more wear and is somewhat dried out, and the tip has been tucked into the buckle by the soldier. All in all, a fine helmet for a minor Axis power that has survived reissue, retaining all of its wartime components.
