British Waterloo Medal 1815 – 40th Foot Regiment (Repaired Suspension) . BM491:
British Waterloo Medal 1815. Name Impressed on side to: “** Jn. Smith. 1 Batt. 40. Reg. Foot. . **”. A fixed ring suspension has replaced the original suspension; you see this quite a bit on the Waterloo medals. Surface and edge wear. Ribbon is crimson with dark blue edges. Note: Waterloo medals are impressed, somewhat heavily, with large serifed capitals into the rim with the space at each end filled by a series of star shaped stamps.
ADDITIONAL NOTESThe Waterloo Medal is a military decoration that was conferred upon every officer, non-commissioned officer, and soldier of the British Army who took part in one or more of the following battles: Ligny (16 June 1815), Quatre Bras (16 June 1815) and Waterloo (18 June 1815). The medal is made of silver and is 37mm in diameter. Thomas Wyon, Chief Engraver to the Royal Mint was selected to design the medal. The design of the Waterloo medal, including size, metal, and naming, set the pattern for most future British campaign medals.
