Brass, Strong-box, High Security Savings Bank, For Bryn Mawr Trust Company:
$225.95

These mini strong-box style banks were a loss leader for large banks post depression era trying to entice customers back to banking.

Produced by W F Burns Company in Chicago in 1901,

Twenty eight years prior to the start of the the great depression, they were utilized by banks across the country, usually in the more afluent neighborhoods, to teach children to save.

With an existing inventory of these boxes sitting idle post depression era, Bryn Mawr Trust corporation decided to re-purpose them.

The mini strong- boxes were proffered to children of new account holders at one of our nation\'s longest operating banking institutions, the now defunct Bryn Mawr Trust Bank on the Philadelphia Main line.

These served a dual purpose, as Philadelphia Main-Liners couldn\'t resist high quality freebees , (and the bank knew this), they profferred this enticement  as a way \"responsible parents\" could teach their little angels to save, all the while assuring that juniors money would also remain at their bank.

Generally, the banks held on to the keys to these boxes, and the least senior employees would be tasked with assisting the little darlings with counting  their loot for deposit while their parents conducted their regular banking transactions.

So generally, these strong-box type banks show up in antique shops, usually missing their keys.

This strong box bank; however, is a little different than most.

The finish is absolutely gorgeous, polished machine ground brass, and while that makes it unique, it is the security mechanism over-kill on this strong box that sets it apart from most of the others of its day.

Aside from a common slot for rolled up dollar bills, ( bill enters ,partially un-rolls, becoming difficult but not impossible to fish out through the coin slot.)

This bank had that covered with an anti-fish baffle tray under the coin slot.

Now  if that weren\'t enough, the bank also featured a mechanical coin rake system activated by inserting any coin into the bank.

Preventing the little angels from fishing or shaking loose any of its contents prior to their trip to see the nice deposit clerk who would happily take their money in exchange for a measly lolli-pop 😃.

The banking tycoons of the day could rest assured that they would receive  junior\'s paper route money before the nice little old lady at the confectionary shop did.

Guess those banking types never heard of 🍬 🍫 🍭  candy futures.

But wait; there\'s more!!

There are no exposed hinges to tamper with either, as the door sits flush into the opening. This was a bank safe technology that was just coming into play around the 1900s, about the same time that thieves were starting to attack safe door hinges with nitro and hammers. (Unbelievable overkill for a childs bank)

The lock is the warded type commonly  used on safety deposit boxes at that time, not secure by today\'s standards, but more than up to the task for locks of the day.

If you hadn\'t guessed by now, the technology wasn\'t designed to keep thieves away. (They could just walk off with the darned thing)

It was designed with all of the modern security features of the day to prevent its owner from removing money for impulse purchases!

Too 😁 funny

Overall, it\'s a lovely bank for that Rainy Day fund that you\'ve been looking to establish,

perhaps  a  fun way to encourage office coffee drinkers to contribute and  poney up for the coffee clatch. 💰

Now you too can proudly carry this beauty around the office, via its own built - in brief-case style handle, perfect for handcuffing it to your wrist for dramatic flair. 😀

Either way, get this one while it\'s available, includes 2 keys that we had a local locksmith manufacture for us.

This is a real conversation starter!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot  the legal disclaimer.

Money in Photos is for sizing comparison purposes only, and is not included with purchase.

You\'ll have to earn your own😃 if you\'re planning on filling this thing up.

All the best!
