These were used to keep dirt and dust out of the barrel, also to protect the muzzle crown from damage. The Brass muzzle caps were used prior to WW2,they would have switched from brass to aluminum with thestart of WW2. Any and all brass would have beenin heavy demand for shell casings and aluminum was used to help divertbrass for war effort.
