Boehm Mid-20th Century Stamped Porcelain Baby Blue Jay #436This wonderful porcelain baby Blue Jay is perching on a brown base with green leaves and a tiny little blue flower. The colors are beautiful with tones of blue, green, black, white and gray. This piece is part of Boehm’s series of baby birds and measures 4 ¼ x 3 3/8. On the underside is the name of the Artist, Baby Blue Jay, #436 and made in “USA”. It was manufactured in 1957.
A little about the Artist Edward Marshall Boehm (1913-1969). He was orphaned at age 7. At 16, he left school to work as a farmhand and then studied animal husbandry. He managed a farm in Maryland from 1934 until 1942. After WWII, Boehm apprenticed with sculptor Herbert Haseltine and taught himself the process of porcelain making. In 1950 he and his wife founded their own porcelain studio in New Jersey. Boehm's designs were sought after globally and given as gifts of state. There is even a wing of the Vatican Museums in Rome named in his memory, the first time that one of the museums in the Vatic
