This is a super rare Belmont Turtle Open Salt Cellar by Bellaire Goblet Co Findlay Ohio circa 1880s. The unique design features a turtle pattern true to form with realistic texture. The salt cellar is made of glass and has a gold to amber color. It measures approximately 3.5 inches in length, 2.5 inches in width, and 1 inch in height.

This original piece is a perfect addition to any collection and is sure to impress. The Belmont Turtle was created in Bellaire Ohio by the Bellaire goblet company which operated from 1876 to 1891. The turtles were reported to be introduced somewhere mid 1880s as cited by one reference, and in the year 1889 by another reference. Either way these little fellows are definitely antique. Now our amber turtle does have several points of concern. There is a smooth or low spot that looks like a chip near the rim of his shell opening up top where my finger is pointing in the photo. On his tail on the underside, there is a rough spot to the end from the way it came out of the mold, or from a chip. The same situation can be noted to his left foot, where instead of textured toe, he has a smooth area so it either came out of the mold with an incomplete fill or he has had a chip to it. On his front foot it looks like he has a chip in the picture, but he actually has extra glass on his first couple toes. There’s no damage there. He has a slight rock when he is placed on the table surface but you have to push him to get it to rock back-and-forth. This is still a very difficult one to locate for collecting. Our friendly reptiles are made in blue and they are made in the amber color presented here. Thank you.
