Fresh finds from the mainland of my property. Previously unearthed barite and quartz vein replaced the petrified wood specimen with quartz and opal and Brite Rose Crystals sprinkled with Pyrite.

I thought I had collected all of the crystal wood from this area; fortunately I was wrong. The above average rainfall and stormy weather this summer in Central Colorado exposed more crystal cluster fossils.

Barite, also spelled \"baryte,\" is a common mineral found in many different geological environments. In most places around the country, barite is found as rough, poorly formed veins or masses and uncommonly as fine, collectible crystals. Colorado, however, is particularly privileged because numerous localities throughout the state produce beautiful, well-formed crystals of barite, the likes of which are quite rare in most other states. These crystals range in color from translucent to reddish brown, but few are as attractive or valuable as the pale blue barytes.

Baryte is incredibly unique and can fool you if you\'re not careful. The glistening surface area makes it seem like a lightweight mineral, but it is heavy! It is so heavy that it has a similar weight to metallic minerals, although it has no metallic properties.
