Vaganova, a younger contemporary of Marina Semyonova and Galina Ulanova, Tatyana Vecheslova and Natalia Dudinskaya, Alla Shelest fit into this circle of the elite with dignity, supplementing the spectrum of his talents with the power of a tragic gift.Her star rose above the stage of the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theater at the very peak of Stalin\'s repressions, and it was the young Shelest in the Leningrad ballet of that time who was called upon to express on stage the pathos of the individual\'s insubordination in the face of total violence and lack of freedom.Phenomenal acting and dancing abilities, an innate gift for “dancing in character”, an incredible energy of personality made Shelest a unique ballerina who had tremendous power over the audience, a ballerina who in the art of choreography will forever retain the place of a dancer-thinker, a dancer-philosopher.Alla Shelest rightfully ranks among the great ballerinas of the twentieth century.
