Taken by tangle nets in 60 meters of water, Balut Island, the Philippines, 2019.

Besides its light-blond color, this is aunusualgloriamaris. As you can see, the shell is almost entirely tiny tent markings, with only the barest hint of the dark banding normal for the species. And the middle \'band\' is not smooth, it ripplesacross the shell, kind of like a run in a silk stocking, and that effect shows up as a slight indentation at the lip. And because of the blond-coloring, the spirelooksdifferent---more concaved and elevated, but I\'m not sure that it is, I think because of the lack of color on this spire, we can see the true shape of a gloriamaris\' spire. All and all, a very unusual yet quite beautiful shell.

You know, I\'m old. I mean, really, I can remember when there was only 26 of these shells in the entire world. I also can remember that while visiting the Philippines as a kid (thirteen at the time?) a photo was taken of me holding TWOgloriamaris, and people got so excited about the photo it ended up in aHawaiian Shell Newsarticle... Then the day came when we heard that someonesnorkelingin the Solomons had found half dozen, that \'s right, half a dozen! And he KEPT ON finding half a dozengloriamarisalmost every time he went out, the lucky beach bum!

Nowanyonecan own one, even you, but nice-sized ones like this are still on the hard-to-find list.This shell, even with the large repair on the side of its body and as unusual as it is, still has that magical something that says it is theGlory of the Seas.Andas thephotos show, it is an unusual yet exquisite beauty that will lookterrificsitting on your shelf!

As for normal disclaimers, we do the best we can with photos, but color is tricky, especially since cell phone cameras automatically lean towards flesh-tone coloring, (that\'s why so many of the photos of shells on show up with more orange than is really there, the camera changes the color, and damm if I can figure out how to stop that from happening, but I try, honest!
