You\'re offerding on a comic book lot:Eddie Campbell\'s Bacchus #1-20Eddie Campbell Comics
1995-199620-issue lot/run
This originated as a companion title to Campbell\'s Deadface series, which starred Bacchus but was much more adventure orientated, or at least as active as Eddie Campbell\'s stories get....In the case of many creators, this would be worthless, but there are many gems to be scraped up from Campbell\'s amateur years, and he does have some sense of quality control in what sees the light of day.Bacchus begins as a vehicle for retelling whichever Greek myths catch Campbell\'s magpie eye, with a certain joyous irreverence. The narrator is the 4,000-year-old god on history\'s longest bender: \"It\'s all a bit of a blur after I invented wine.\" The scripting perfectly captures the simultaneously wise and rambling nature of pub conversations, and yet there is always a certain threat of violence. The first self-published issue disappoints -- a Cerebus jam probably designed to lure readers with a bigger name -- but then the pedal\'s down and we\'re off on a wild ride with \"King Bacchus\"in which the old guy\'s local pub secedes from UK rule. All would be well if Delirium Tremens and his Screaming Habdabs weren\'t on Bacchus\'s trail, forcing him to take refuge in a handy painting. As Bacchus is chased through a world of artworks, the cleverest among the pub\'s citizens bring in Neil \"Scary Trousers\" Gaiman to reinvent their hero as a more popular, offbeat superhero version of himself. Alan Moore pops up as the wizard who lives in the basement, as Campbell weaves fine art, fine wine and parody effortlessly into a detailed and inventive tapestry. The only downside is the art assistance from Pete Mullins, who smoothes out some of Campbell\'s rough and scratchy edges, and doesn\'t have his feel for line quality, which is a great pity. However, he\'s a fixture of the series so you soon get used to it. Bacchus is an intensely civilized comic whose charms may bypass many readers. Lovers of spinning yarns over a few pints will adore it.
