This is an authentic U.S. Air Force A-2 Flyer’sJacket as authorized for wear/issued to qualified flight crew.

This is an official military A-2Leather Flight Jacket as authorized for wear by U. S. Air Force rated flightcrew. The National Stock Number (NSN) 8415-01-258-6405 on the garment tag showsthat this garment was manufactured for military issue/use.

Overall condition of this jacket isexcellent. The goatskin is soft and supple with no scratches, scrapes, stainsor worn spots on the exterior. The interior shows no significant signs of wear.Knit cuffs and waistband are in excellent condition.

Size is 44R – comparable to normal jacket sizing - see the pictures formeasurement chart.

It was produced by Avirex, Ltd., whichis one of the three contractors making these jackets for the U.S. militarysince the A-2 was re-introduced in 1987. There have been four contractors, butAvirex changed its name to The Cockpit in 2005 so it’s really the same company.(The other two: Branded Garments, Inc. and Saddlery/Cooper Sportswear Mfg. Co.,Inc.) The garment tag shows the contract number SP0100-99-D-4009-0188 which indicatesthat this jacket was manufactured by government contractor Avirex, Ltd in 1999.Note that it’s Lot #01, making this one of the very first of the “21stCentury” A-2 jackets made.

From 1987-1998 the A-2 wasessentially the same as the WW2 design, which was designed for a 1940s physiqueand was a very snug fit. Modern pilots complained, so an updated version was designedin 1999 to serve present-day pilot requirements while retaining the essential characterof the original A-2 Flight Jackets.

Based on response from Air Forcepilots regarding the 1987 version of the A-2 flight jacket, the design wasmodified in 1999 to serve present-day pilot requirements. The hook-type collarclosure was eliminated, sizing was more generous, handwarmer pockets were addedalong with an additional inside pocket and a pen/pencil holder.

While many, if not most unitsissue these jackets to newly-rated pilots and aircrew; others issue the Nomex CWU-36OR -45 jackets and members must buy their own leather jackets if desired. Since1998, the entity through which the A-2 jackets have been sold to military unitsor to individual service members has the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia, soall military A-2 jackets produced post-1998 will bear the DSCP tag.
