Authentic 1862 Deed to Trustee of Two Slaves & $800 Held For Wife & Children:
$1630.00

This is an original and authentic, rare 1862 deed to a trustee of two slaves and $800, held in trust, for the wife and children of a former slave owner. The deed of trust is a collectible item and a historical document from the Civil War era in American history. The document is in good shape, with no major flaws or omissions, and is sure to be a valuable addition to any collection. It is protected between two thick sheets of plexiglass and will be packaged well prior to shipment and insured.

This document was displayed in a history museum in Georgia for an unknown amount of time. The museum eventually closed and the document was sold to an antique dealer, who in turn resold the document.

The deed of trust was drawn for a man by the name of William H. Webb, who appears to have been an officer in the Civil War. His wife is listed in the deed as Cordier B. Webb. The trustee was named James A Bradford. It was drawn in Muscogee County, State of Georgia. The clerk who recorded the deed was F. M. Brooks.

I had transcribed the document and included that in my description, yet it was somehow deleted when I saved the listing as a draft. I will work to get the transcription back in here. I had also included research on the family lineage and lost that information too. Will work on adding that back also. It may take a while since there was so much information.

The two slaves were listed by first name only as Andrew, 32 years old, and Margaritt, 23 years old. It’s possible they used the surname Webb, which may be of interest to genealogists or historians. The date on this deed of trust is the 17th day of May, 1862, well before The Emancipation Proclamation, which was dated the 1st day of January, 1863. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that abolished slavery in any place subject to their jurisdiction was ratified on the 31st day of January, 1865.
