You are offerding on one John Atherton complex wood molding plane as pictured. The fence section has been cut down, so please keep reading down to the condition paragraphs.

It is marked "J ATHERTON LIVERPOOL" in the arched mark, and also with owners "J SEDGWICK" and "W SEDGWICK" (both wavy bordered stamps) and owner "J J DEAN" all on the front end, and with "3" and DEAN again on the back end.

The iron is not marked.

Overall length is not quite 9-7/16".

The profile is a small Grecian ogee.There is one picture with the back end (not the front) sitting on graph paper with 1/4" squares.

John Atherton made planes in Liverpool, England, from about 1800 to 1829.Please seethe book Goodman's British Planemakers 4th Edition for more information about him. The 3rd Edition rates his planes as RA, or rare.

The fence section has been completely cut off as can be seen. Usually when that is done you find some empty screw holes in the cut-off area as the user still needs a fence, perhaps at a different spacing from the profile.

Condition would otherwise be good, with a very slight left to right warp, some odd stains on the upper right side, and some dings on the lower right side near the iron. It would benefit from a cleaning. There are avarietyof scratches and dings in the wood, and some chips along the lower right hand edge.

The iron and the wedge bothappear to be original to the plane.

USPS POSTAGE RATE INCREASES: I use the Post Office for everything, and yes, the shipping charges just keep going up and up. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights.I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.
