Art Thompson 1975 Seawolf Numbered Native American Print:
$420.00

This is a numbered and signed silkscreen print by legendary Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations artist Art Thompson. It is a 'Wolf Transforming Into Whale' design and measures 18 inches tall by 24 inches wide. It is from 1976. This creature is also known as a 'Sea Wolf' or 'Wasgo'.Sea Wolf is a prominent Northwest Coast being of the undersea world. Called Wasco or Wasgo, this giant sea monster has the head and tail of Wolf, with Killer Whale elements such as fins and a blowhole. Wasco, who hunts Killer Whales and brings them home to feed his family, is a popular being in stories and a favoured spirit guide among Haida fishers. Sea Wolf is an alternate form of the undersea world of beings Sea Bear and Snag, and as such is one of those who literally carry the world on their backs in Haida mythology and cosmology.Art Thompson was largely a self-taught artist, but he did study with Nuu-chah-nulth artists Ron Hamilton and Joe David. From 1978 to 1981, he carved with Duane Pasco. Art studied commercial art at Camosun College in Victoria, BC, as well as at the Vancouver School of Art. He was greatly influenced by artists at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art at 'Ksan in Hazelton, BC. Art produced many works including silkscreen prints, masks, totem poles, jewellery, bentwood boxes, and ceremonial puppets. His media included silver and gold, wood, deer hide, acrylic paint, and pastels. Sea creatures were one of his favourite subjects, and many of his print images were drawn from drum heads. The design Our Beginnings was created as the logo for the 1997 North American Indigenous Games. He is considered to be one of the great Nuu-chah-nulth artists of the 20th century. Art passed away in 2003.
