During the Apollo era, the white space suits were badly abraded after just a few EVAs.
A method was developed to test various substances and the outside layers of the spacesuits. Tests were done on the simulated Martian environment and the earth environment. The substance they used for the moon was mined from Arizona's Black Poit Lava Flow. The Martian simulant came from Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcanoes
