Apollo 16 , the tenth crewed mission in the United States Apollo space program, took place from April 16 to 27, 1972 . It was the second of Apollo's "J missions," characterized by an extended stay on the lunar surface, a focus on scientific exploration, and the use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) . Here are some key details about Apollo 16:

  • Mission Objective : To explore the Moon's surface, collect samples, and conduct scientific experiments.
  • Crew Members :
    • Commander John W. Young
    • Lunar Module Pilot Charles M. Duke Jr.
    • Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly
  • Landing Site : The Descartes Highlands , chosen due to expectations that it might be an area formed by volcanic action (though this turned out not to be the case).
  • Lunar Surface Exploration :
    • Sample Collection : The astronauts collected 95.71 kilograms (211.0 pounds) of lunar samples.
    • EVA Duration : They conducted three spacewalks (extravehicular activities) totaling 20 hours and 14 minutes .
    • Lunar Rover : They drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle a distance of 26.7 kilometers (16.6 miles) .
  • Spacecraft Components :
    • Command and Service Module (CSM) : Named Casper .
    • Lunar Module (LM) : Named Orion .
  • Launch Date : April 16, 1972, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
  • Moon Landing Delay : A problem with the spacecraft's main engine caused a six-hour delay in the Moon landing, but NASA overcame the issue.
