What an amazing find this is! This antique prison cell key from Washington State Penitentiary, also known as Walla Walla, appears to be hand forged and dates from the early days of the prison, which opened in 1886. Measuring 6 3/4" in length, it comes with a signed note reading "This original Washington State Penitentiary cell key from cell Block B for cell number one of this cell block was presented to Norma Hozan on March 30, 1964 by Warden Bob Rhay. On May 8, 1971 Norma Hozan Walla Walla Washington presented this key marked B1 to Roy Allington, Odessa Washington for his collection" and is signed on the bottom by Norma Hozan. This was most likely an item that was rendered obsolete as part of upgrades to the prison Warden Rhay undertook during the 1950's and presented to a retiring prison guard. While antique prison cell keys are not exactly scarce, being able to identify the Prison and having the provenance makes this a really spectacular item for the advanced collector. You just don't see museum quality items like this come up for sale very often!
