Antique \'Mulford Hypo-Unit\' nickel/silver or nickel/silver plated (interior may be brass) disposable syringe case(approx. 5\" x 3.25\" in.), likely from 1920s. Includes all 12 original syringes with glass syringe tip covers, 7/12 with contents, and cloth storage sheath/bag. Case has blank engraving plate on front surface.Syringes contain/contained: Nitroglycerin, Caffeine & Sodium benzoate, Camphor, \'Cardiac No. 1\', Digitos [Digitalis?], Atropine, Strychnine
Condition: Well preserved overall with some small to moderate surface scratches/scuffs to nickel plated case, hinges and spring-loaded internal syringe holder work smoothly. All 12 drug syringes present, and 7/12 appear to be unused/still contain full dose/contents. Original sewn cloth sheath/bag lightly soiled/worn.In 1912 James T. Greely invented the first real disposable syringes and patented their design in 1912. These syringes had a patent date of April 5, 1921 and manufacturer, H. K. Mulford Company, out of Philadelphia, PA. H. K. Mulford Company was founded in the late 1880\'s by Henry Mulford when he bought a drugstore in Philadelphia where he created various medicines. By the 1890\'s, the company had two labratories, a field office in Chicago, and continued to grow from there, opening a branch in San Francisco. They were known for the first commercial production of the diptheria antitoxin, as well as a smallpox vaccine, rabies vaccine, and antivenin. In 1929, H. K. Mulford Company merged with Sharp & Dohme, a pharmaceutical company with labratories headquartered in Baltimore MD, and who was later was aquired by Merck & Co.
